However: I've been experimenting, and unfortunately (and not entirely unexpectedly), the GUI script is totally unreliable. Sometimes it toggles the Folders List On or Off, and sometimes it doesn't. No idea why. On the other hand, it always adjusts the font size - so sometimes (every second time. more or less) it gets out of phase, increasing font size when reducing preview pane (opening Folders List) instead of vice versa. I think you'd better forget this.
Can preferences be scripted? What say?
No. They cannot.
OK, I’ll Forget the idea of a script. But I’m still grateful for your time and effort in looking into this.
I’ve set it up so that cmd-shift-0 toggles the folder list, right next to cmd-shift – and cmd-shift-=. Not too bad, and now I can use side-by-side columns when there are a large number of messages in the message list – and still be able to read them with my small monitor and presbyopic vision.
