Funny you should ask; I just did that today. Bottom line: it's probably
okay, but ... when I reinstalled using the same Product _Key_ that I used
the first time, I was given a slightly different Product Id of the
reinstalled copy of Office 2004. Since we have three Product Keys, I think
that the first one can be reused if the Office removal program is used
first; it's just that I got a slightly different Product ID after the
reinstall. (If you're curious, the second Product ID differed from the first
in the last two digits only.)

A definitive answer should probably come from a Microsoft person, but the
reinstall seemed to work for me.

Here are the gory details of what I did:

I used the Office Removal program (with Office Notifications turned off).
The first time the removal program said I had the following programs, or
parts of them, on my hard drive: Office 98, Office 2001, Office X (or its
demo), and Office 2004 (or its demo). The odd thing was that I never had
Office 2001 or X installed. Anyway, I just went ahead checked the box for
Office 2004 (only) and was told the program was removed. Since the removal
was so fast, I ran the removal program again. This time, it showed that I
had one less program on my disk; I think that Office 98, Office X, and
Office 2004 were listed this time. Again, I checked the box for Office 2004
only. After this removal, third run of the removal program showed only
Office 98 being present, so I canceled it.

Note: In checking my disk later, I noticed that Microsoft Autoupdate (and
its plist file) were on my disk. I removed them and I think I couldn't
initially empty the trash because the autoupdate demon (or something like
that) was said to be still active. After a reboot, I could then empty the
trash (this is from memory). I don't know if the Autoupdate is installed
automatically; I think that I had asked for it to be used, but after the
initial installation.

For what it's worth, the removal program didn't remove the duplicated fonts
that were put in my User folder either.
