Why do you say that SpamSieve is doing absolutely nothing? Does the delay
*begin* in between the completion of one mail check and the beginning of the
next?

SpamAssassin recently had a problem with its bayesian tests caused by
intentionally malformed messages that would tarpit bayesian analysis:
