I would try to set something up for business mail, but for friends and
family, I would just send a note prior to leaving.

You might want to make a rule:

Is not from a mailing list
>From  is in group "your auto-respond group" or From is in category
"auto-respond" Note: you can have more than one category for a contact.

Rule 13 <http://www.entourage.mvps.org/rules/example/rule013.html> has you
set up a group. You might try this with a small test group to see how it
works.

I would also think about changing the criteria to "is in group"
"auto-respond", and delete the action to "add sender". This way you wouldn't
respond to a spam message.
