How did you import? You probably know this, but to cover the basics:
You can import from an older version to a newer version.
OE to Entourage 2001
OE to Entourage X or Entourage 2004
Entourage 2001 to Entourage X or Entourage 2004
You cannot import from a newer version to an older version. eg: Entourage X
to OE or Entourage 2001 using Entourage.
You cannot import from the same version of Entourage. eg: Entourage X to
Entourage X or Entourage 2001 to Entourage 2001.
You can use the MBOX method or the Export-Import Scripts to transfer mail
from one identity to another.

Sounds like the database is a goner.

Repairing permissions, DW do not really touch Entourage's database. A lot of
things could cause a sudden death just like a hard drive can die without
warning. I'm thinking fragmented drive and possibly too full drive as
contributors to the problem. To rebuild you need twice the space (should be
contiguous) of the Identity. Have you checked the space on the drive to see
if space could be an issue in rebuilding?
Another thought is he is using Entourage X so there is a limit to the
database size. Entourage X has a 4 GB limit on the Database file (there is
no Messages file), and you will be warned as you near the limit. How big was
his database?

I've not heard of any success. Sorry.

If you could open the database then it's possible to use Paul's script to
export the data out, or drag out the individual folders, but it sounds like
it's too corrupted to open.
Surely there is some backup of his Microsoft User Data folder during the
last two years. At least he would have part of his data.
