At least in Entourage X (mine is 10.6.1), the 3-second default (user
modifiable) that converts items in a folder noted as "unread" fails to then
mark them as "read" under the following condition:

The item was first brought into Entourage (or that folder) from the email
account and that message --
1) is selected within a given folder (I keep preview 'on')
2) was only partly downloaded from the email account owing to its being over
a certain size the user has specified in that account's settings
3) the user then requests that the item be fully received when mail from
that account is next received, and
4) the item remains highlighted as the request for getting mail is executed,
as it would be if the user cycles the receive mail call from the send and
receive pull down menus or other means that do not change the item selection
in the folder's view.

While the item then becomes complete (and then displays fully in the preview
pane with attachments, graphics, or whatever), its status as being unread
remains the same throughout the entire time. To get the item to appear to
be unread, another item must be selected and then go back to the first one
for 3 seconds (or as specified), or it must be manually set as "unread".
This seems to be a quirk, not a real bug, but worth noting. Perhaps also,
earlier, noted by others; perhaps fixed within Entourage 2004 (v. 11).

Cheers,
