As the user was having a couple of other apps misbehave, we replaced the RAM (2 x 512 MB) in the PowerBook two weeks ago and since then Entourage 2004 hasn't reported problems with the db.
I'm not sure if flaky RAM can cause the Database Utility to find 'imaginary' problems with the db or if we were seeing genuine corruption, but I thought I'd pass this on, in case it helps others seeing the same issue. So, if Jud or any of the other MS guys are reading this, I'd be keen to hear if there's anything else worth trying before we cut our losses and start the user on an empty identity and leave the old one behind as a read-only archive. (If it's any help, I can burn the data on a disc when the user is next in town and then send it to you). I ended up calling Microsoft - the tech suggested exporting everything to an Entourage archive, creating a new identity and then importing the data from the archive into it. My user who had this issue has been on the road for several weeks and hasn't been able to try this procedure yet - if anybody here does try it, please post your results. X to 2004 with all the relevant patches, running on OS X 10.3.8. Every couple of days, he sees the 'Your Office database is damaged' message. He runs the Database Utility and can successfully rebuild - or at least that's what he is told. Next time he gets the warning, he can do a Verify and get this message: ====================== Starting Scan ==================== ERROR: BlockID #4933 has an unknown checksum ERROR: BlockID #14163 has an unknown checksum ====================== Scan Ended ==================== I think the BlockIDs vary so I'm not sure if it's a case of some 'bad' messages that should be purged - if so, how would I pinpoint them? I've run Disk Utility and Disk Warrior on the drive and it checks out OK.
