Yep, that's the name. The quote-mark is "inches" and it's just the name the 
computer came with, when I bought it, used. Can I change the name of the drive 
without messing up my Home-identity? In that case I'll certainly try that.

The name of your hard drive is iMac 17" - with the quote marks? Are those
straight quotes or 'curly quotes'?

That may be the problem. I have previously had problems with hard disks
named with non-alphanumeric characters.

With OS X I have no idea whether simply changing the name of a hard disk is
a practical proposition, but I would suggest you try.
