I’ve been using the excellent Mailblocks service as a web-based IMAP server for several years. However, a couple of weeks ago I received the email I had been dreading ever since AOL bought Mailblocks: AOL is discontinuing the Mailblocks service in mid-November and urging users to switch to AIM mail. My Mailblocks set up was perfect for my work style. I have six or so email addresses that I use for outgoing email, depending on who I’m sending to. Each of those accounts is set up to forward incoming mail automatically to Mailblocks. Mailblocks filters out spam, uses rules to sort messages into folders, and puts everything else  in my Inbox. I can then manage my Mailblocks mail using Entourage on my main machine, check all Mailblocks mail from any web browser on any machine, and best of all, only get spam-filtered, post-sorting email on my Treo 650. I also very much liked Mailblocks's white-list-based challenge-response system, which I know has been trashed all over the Internet, but I liked it. A few days of screwing around with possible replacements have not surfaced a good alternative. I have web-based mail server capability at .Mac, SBC, AIM and XO. None of them offers the right combination of accessibility and management. I’m ready to give up on challenge-response, since nobody seems to support that, but I can’t even find one that will support IMAP from Entourage and POP from SnapperMail on the Treo like Mailblocks did. And I can’t find anyone who’ll let me set up the sorting rules that Mailblocks did. I’d be interested in knowing if anyone else has similar work styles and has found a good solution for this problem.
