you are all correct, and it is a 'known limitation' (to some of us, at
least). The quick filter searches ONLY the displayed part of the
'from' address - the data that is shown in the from column of the
mailbox listing.
So, if a mail has a display name in the from field only the display
name will be searched. If it doesn't have a display name, the email
address is displayed in the folder listing and this is what is searched.
it has been that way for a long time.

Right. Entourage 2004 is searching in only part of the From field:
Bob Virzi <[email protected]>
These search terms work:
From contains Bob
From contains Virzi
From contains Bob Virzi
But this search terms does not work:
From contains bob.
However, Spotlight (OS 10.4.11) can find:
bob.virzi
