Will,
good stuff. though southeastern & outer Coastal Plain ecosystems are way cool, Gordonia is something special, esp when they are in full flower and then again in the autumn/winter when single leaves here & there turn red. wonderful tree! if ENTS has taught me one thing, it is to be skeptical of record heights. Longleaf might have reached 140 in some locations historically. I would bet most of those locations are under plow, malls, roads, etc. I've seen a lot of the LLP forest, from SC to AL & FLA, and I am having a hard time thinking of a tall forest. Perhaps Big Woods near Thomasville, GA is one of the more productive LLP forests I've seen. i agree, natural slash pine forests are cool, too. this is a good time to see them. but, i have to say: longleaf rules! or, it should more than it does right now across the landscape. nearly a perfect tree for wildlife & humans needs. neil On Jan 4, 8:53 pm, "Will Blozan" <[email protected]> wrote: > Larry, > > I saw some longleaf pines in south GA that certainly broke 100'.
