Don,

As I think you are aware, I have a TruPulse 360. Love it! And yes, you are
right the missing line routine does give the right answer.

Bob-
As you might imagine, I've been checking out laser rangefinders...if I'm
reading the following snippet correctly:

"The 360 series has an integrated compass that allows you to measure azimuth
and provides an extra onboard solution called missing line. This is a simple
2-shot routine that instantly calculates the distance, inclination and azimuth
direction value between any two remote points. Using our exclusive TruVector
Compass Technology™, you can now obtain the best possible azimuth accuracy
regardless of what pitch or angle you shoot from. No other compass laser can do
that.",

it would appear that the TruPulse 360 is using the sine/sine method, to
determine the 'missing line', or in the case of your solved problem attachment,
the 'length' between top and bottom?

ENTS,

Attached is the first problem that I promised. It deals with determining
trunk length of a leaning tree and is presented in a Word document. The
solution utilizes the law of cosines. Incidentally, Paul Jost has been a
good advocate of that law. Maybe we can think up a problem or two.
