James- I had to think about this a little, and may still not have it. It's kind of like "it's not the length of daylight hours that affects fall leaf coloration, but the length of night hours...". The trees aren't so much migrating (moving, lock stock and barrel) as the southern range is moving north, as the tree species at the southern end of the range died off. The relationship of altitude to latitude once again comes to the fore, as you mention species 'marching up the hill' in the Appalachians. -Don
