I like the term stone block islands because that is exactly what they are  
but I had never thought of in that way.  What I always find amazing is  how 
many 
plants you see in those places that you'll never spot anywhere  else.
 
My personal favorite stone block island is out a rocky point in a heavily  
forested area that you get to by hopping across a series of three to four foot  
gaps to a very large rock about forty feet across and twenty or more  feet 
deep.  The top surface of the rock is covered with an incredibly soft  carpet 
of 
six inch thick moss that causes my toes to beg the rest of my  body to take my 
boots off....at least once a year the boots come  off!
