Come Celebrate Earth Day and Wilderness!
With the Academy of Natural Sciences

Wilderness historian, advocate, and author Doug Scott will discuss what
wilderness protection means during this free afternoon lecture. He will
present selections from his books, The Enduring Wilderness: Protecting our
Natural Heritage Through the Wilderness Act and the soon-to-be-published Our
Wilderness: America's Common Ground. He will also talk about citizen efforts
to protect public lands under the Wilderness Act of 1964, as well as the
history of wilderness in Pennsylvania.

Our Wilderness is a photographic tribute and primer that examines what
wilderness really means to individual Americans and why we should remain
vigilant in our protection of these lands. Congress has preserved in
perpetuity more than 700 wilderness areas under the Wilderness Act since
1964, representing almost 5 percent of all the land in the United States.

Our Wilderness addresses the environmental, educational, economical, and
spiritual reasons why wilderness is so important to Americans, and reminds
us why we need to protect our lands for future generations. Actor and
wilderness enthusiast Robert Redford wrote the foreword for Our Wilderness,
which is scheduled to be published by Fulcrum Publishing in May.

of Friends of Allegheny Wilderness and their supporters for the
Commonwealth's sole national forest.
