Sapsuckers can killl a tree if they completely girdle it.  By
accident, not on purpose.  They drill the holes to attract insects
that get stuck in the sap, and then they come back to eat the insects.

They best way to identify a linden is when in seed,  it has a narrow
tongue like part with a seed on a stem hanging below it.
