From: Justo Casillas <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: International recognition to our Chair Date: Wed, 24 Jan 2001 14:23:53 -0600 We in LEAD-Mexico are extremely proud to inform our LEAD family that January 22, 2001 Julia Carabias Lillo, our NSC Chair, was awarded by the WWF the Paul Getty prize as recognition of her outstanding conservation efforts. Among her accomplishments she was able, while Mexico's last administration Secretary for the Environment, Natural Resources and Fisheries, to double the country's protected areas surface to reach more than 6% of the whole Mexican territory under protection; she also played a central role in fighting critical forest fires in 1998; and opened the political environmental process to public and citizens participation; etc. She announced that the amount received "is being returned to Nature" by creating a fund to protect what she considers as the most fragile and one of the must beautiful sites in the world: the Lacantin River Banks in the Lacandona Tropical Forest in the Southeastern part of our country. "There is still a long way to walk towards Nature conservation but we have now better conditions to face the problems", she declared. JUSTO CASILLAS R.
