From: Patrick O'Heffernan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Nigeria Rainforests Date: Mon, 12 Feb 2001 19:36:24 -0000 One of the world's most important clusters of tropical life in the world still survives, barely, in Nigeria's southeastern state of Cross River - despite armed conflict, poaching, ethnic strife, commercial greed, and international apathy. This forest shelters some of Africa's most endangered primates, including drill monkeys, lowland gorillas, elephants, hippos, and a huge diversity of birds. Ninety-five per cent of Nigeria;s rain forests have been lost. Only this remains, and it is threatened. Part of the reason the Cross River is still there is the work of one person, Odigha Odigha, who has dedicated, and risked, his life to save the Cross River Rainforest. He created the NGO Coalition for Environment and the Cross River State Forestry Commission, which together, offer some protection. I had the honor of meeting him at the Goldman Foundation recently and was very im- pressed by both his accomplishment and his dedication. He has lessons for us all. You can access some of these lessons at the NGOCE web page, www.geocities.com/ngocenvironement <http://www.geocities.com/ngocenvironement> . Take a look. It is well worth it.
