The only reason I can think of is if you're looking for a very small amount
of diffuse light in a given area, and your flash can't reduce its output
enough. No black object is completely non-reflective, so there will be a
small amount of diffuse light given off.
I haven't seen the diagram referred to, but that's the only thing that makes
sense to me.
