I've just got the Sigma 70-200 and 1.4x converter. Very impressive compared
        to my 75-300 USM.

I went to Kenya before I moved to EOS but took a 75-300 4-5.6 Lens, 2x TC and
a 135 2.8 Lens. I only used the TC on the 75-300 once in all the time I was
there,
generally the animals are close enough that 300 is enough, sometimes even 200
is. You will also probably be on a tour bus which can't always stop its engine
when
you want to take a photo and hasn't got room to set up a tripod so faster
lenses are
preferable. Think about what speed film you want to use, personally I wanted to
use 100 or 64 ASA film whenever I could so the fastest available Lens is a
        godsend.

All in all then, get the 70-200 and then think carefully about what TC to pair
it
with, both the 1.4x and 2x have their advantages, eventually you will probably
        want both of them.
