The EOS Elan 7 autofocuses until f/5.6. When you mount the extender on your
lens you'll get an f/8.0 lens. With the canon extender the body thinks he's
got an f/8.0 lens and will not autofocus. If you use a third party extender
(kenko for example) you may get away with autofocus but it might not work
very properly. The non canon (most of them) won't give the correct aperture
to the body so it still thinks he's got an f/5.6 lens and will (try) to
autofocus.

Although the EOS Elan 7 is the newest canon body it won't autofocus with
f/8.0 lenses like it's big brothers EOS 3 and 1V. Canon probably leaves that
feature to the very expensive pro bodies (unfortunately). Those two bodies
will autofocus with your wife's combination.
