The two most famous shops I know are Gasser in San
Francisco and Keeble & Shuchat in Palo Alto.
Nevertheless, I advice you not to buy from them
because they are quite expensive. For locals the
service etc. might offset the (much) higher price but
for you it does not make any sense. Instead I would
buy from B&H or Camera World of Oregon and let them
ship it to your hotel. That way you can also avoid
sales taxes (if you leave the USA you can get it back,
I think, but it is an additional hassle). Before you
do that verify that B&H or CWO does ship to hotels and
that the hotel does accept mail for guests.
Alternatively, if you know somebody living in this
area you can ship it to that person. I highly
recommend you only to buy from mail order houses with
a high reputation because if something goes wrong it
will be even a higher hassle for you then for a local
and you might end up with nothing but wasted time.

PS: Gasser is on 4rth or 5th Ave. If you go down
Market street with street numbers getting smaller turn
right on 4th or 5th ave. From there it is about 1/2
miles, I think. I have been there only two times.
K&S is in Palo Alto, about 40 miles south of SF.
Coming from downtown Palo Alto (there is a quite nice
gallery on the right just before the underpass) turn
left onto El Camino. After some time turn left onto
California Ave. At the end of this street you will see
K&S. The professional store (MF, studio stuff, digital
cameras etc) is on your right and the other is on the
left (35mm, camera bags, tripods/monopods, books,
development, etc).
