I have had D30 for six weeks now and love it. I use it with L zooms and the
BG-ED3 double battery vertical grip, and 1gB microdrive. The comments about
it not being "pro" are interesting. I think Canon have bent over backwards
to make the D30 as "pro" as possible without breaking their agreement with
Kodak. Marketing it as based on the EOS 30 is part of this. However I
handled an EOS 30 recently and was surprised how solid the D30 feels by
comparison. For example, the rubberised grip zones are the same as on my EOS
1v, not moulded plastic as on the 30. Also the BG-ED3 grip is made to the
same standards as the pro grips for EOS 1 and 3. I hope this means the
BG-ED3 will be compatible with the "pro" digital EOS when it comes.
Since getting the D30 my 1V has become the back-up camera. I recently did an
assignment photographing a large choir. My main cameras were Mamiya 6 with
NPH and NHG. I used The D30 to check lighting, exposure etc. However I
printed off a 12 x 8 print from the D30, (used nik-sharpener pro, and
Genuine Fractals) and put it in with the medium format proofs. The client
chose it, said the others were soft by comparison! She doesn't know
anything about photography, it was just another picture to her. (BTW there
was nothing wrong with the MF focussing).
The biggest surprise about owning the D30 has been its usability as an
available light camera. The combination of RAW, 1600 ASA, white balance
correction and quietness beat anything in my previous experience which
includes several years of Leica M6s.
I'm lookiing forward to really testing it in some 100/200 ASA conditions.
I've got some weddings coming up, but I'm a bit apprehensive about brides'
dresses. I have found it easy to blow out highlights on the D30.
Sorry this has become a bit long
Mike
