it works with it, but after reading your note I dug up the lens, tube
and every EOS body I could find, namely EOS 3, EOS 5 and EOS 300 and
tried it with all of them, and none could focus even remotely useful
way, in moderately dim light (measured 1/30 at f/5.6 with ISO 100).
They simply failed to achieve focus at all most of the time. 
Without the tube, perfect focus every time.

Perhaps you need to point it on a more contrasty subject.
Try a pair of blinds on your window or a lampshade.
If the subject is plain (like a wall) AF will just hunt.
