What about a used 1n? They are relatively cheap nowadays. Maybe $650 or so depending on condition. No eye control focus, buttons are pretty much like the 1 and I think also the 1v. AF is fairly fast. The body is not that small (a battery grip/booster definitely will improve holding even more), etc. So if you think about upgrading then a used 1n might be it.
