I have the Metz flash and I'm quite satisfied with it so far. I've never
used a 550EX so I can't really compare, but when looking at specs side to
side I decided to get the Metz since I wanted the ability to use it on
different bodies and it provides everything 550EX has and more with cheaper
price.
I was amazed how easy it was to operate. When I first got the unit it came
with german/dutch/french manuals (I got it from Germany) of which none is a
language I understand I still figured out pretty much all of it's
functions. With manual I could understand it's use was a breeze ;-)

http://www.photozone.de/canonflash.htm to which I can add that 54 MZ-3
manual output is from full to 1/256.
