Yes, Residual Oil Remover does leave a film that can reduce the
effectiveness of the coatings. That is why I always have to follow it
with the t-shirt method. I only use it to get off nasty gunk, then
clean the lens normally (for me). I have heard good things about
Eclipse elswhere too. PEC-12, or whatever it is called is supposed to
be good for cleaning negs/chromes too. I have only used the Edwal film
cleaner, and it works great, but will eat plastic slide mounts (and
spread dissolved mount across the film) and it will grow nasty looking
gunk in it, like some sort of algae. I wonder sometimes if this gunk
will continue to grow on the film as it is stored. (Sorry, getting more
off topic, but I figured while I was talking about it).

A microfiber cloth has an inherent danger: they're relatively expensive
(for a chunk of cloth) and they tend to get re-used for a long time, and
not washed often (after all, they look clean, and washing them is not as
easy as throwing them in the machine).

Imagine this: as you are cleaning the lens with a section of the cloth
wrapped around your finger. Another section of the cloth that you're
not paying attention to brushes against the filter ring and picks up
some light aluminum dust or paint left by a filter. You put the cloth
away without damaging the lens this time, but next time when you pick up
the cloth differently and end up rubbing that aluminum piece or paint
dust across the surface of your lens. Personally I don't think it is
worth the risk.
