Hey Julian,
Thanks for looking for me. I found those references in the discussion
archives. I just didn't see one of photo.net's "formal" reviews, as I
though Bob was referring to.
It seems that all the opinions on this lens are sorta split between
"it's great" and "it sucks", or maybe it's more like "if it's tamron, it
must suck" since a number of the opinions on photo.net don't seem to be
based on any experience with the lens. I find that this particular
lens gets more "it's great" comments than most 3rd party wide angles, so
I went for it. As I was reading the opinions on photo.net, in
particular, but also in the archives, I couldn't help but wonder how
much of it was genuine experience and how much of it was experience
colored by personal preference (either for or against 3rd party lenses)
and "common wisdom" that says 3rd party lenses are never as good as
mfr's own.
I generally fall into the "canon good/3rd party bad" camp myself, but it
seems that absolutely none of the wide lenses, zoom or prime, for canon
20mm or wider test very well, so in this case I looked beyond canon.
Another area where 3rd party lenses seem to be almost as good as canon
is in macros. The macros at 50, and around 100 from both sigma and
tamron are supposed to be great, both in tests and user opinions. And
the sigma 80-200 usually gets the nod for being decent, despite sigma's
bad construction quality rep. I've probably missed a couple others that
are considered "gems".
Sorry for the rambling. Guess I will find out what I think about the
Tamron around wednesday when it arrives.
Thanks for everyone's help,
Mike
