All this talk of 3rd party lenses and new EOS body compatability has
got me wondering: I'm about to buy a Tamron 20-40, and I have an Elan

work on this body? Anyone know for sure? And is such a conversion
possible?

Ken,
Tamron lenses do not have the same problems Sigma or Tokina has.
The 20-40mm F2.7-3.5 will work with your Elan 7.
Incidentally, I spoke with my friends at Tokina this morning.
What I was told is that their ATX lenses (i.e., ATX400mm F5.6)
carry a 10-year warranty. If you have the documentation
to show you bought it less than 10 years ago then there
is no charge for the upgrade.
Other Tokina Lenses like the 20-35mm F3.5-4.5 have a 3 or 5 year
warranty depending when you purchased it. Again, if it is within
this warranty period there is N/C for the upgrade.
IMPORTANT: If your Tokina lens is a recent model that already works
with the EOS3 then ther is no need to upgrade as the integrated
circuit inside the lens is compatible with the newer ELan 7.
Only Sigma lenses require an upgrade when you move from EOS3 to Elan 7
even if your Sigma lens works fine with an EOS3.
