One word about the Bogen 308 ball head that was suggested to me during
my last ball head search. I was cautioned away from the 308 by someone
who had one because he said the ball is made of resin, and after much
use, begins to become flat spotted. Once it has flat spots, if your
composition brings the flat spot close to the clamping point, but not
directly on it, the composition will slip a bit as the clamp falls into
the flat area, moving the ball and camera slightly.
I never used one, so I don't know for sure. Sounds a lot like
overtightening to me. Also you can probably buy a replacement ball, as
I think it is the 308 that comes in a user assembled kit, and the parts
are probably available separately.
Personally I went for the Velbon PH-253M. All magnesium and only 6 oz.
I have heard good things about the next one up also (the PH-163Q). The
253 is tiny, and yet does a pretty good job of holding my 70-200/2.8 in
a pinch.
