Personally, I prefer the "darker" version of the screens (the old laser
matte type) because the images seem to pop into focus more clearly.
With the new laser matte screens, the out of focus areas don't seem to
be very out of focus due to the the regular pattern of "lenses" etched
into the screen focusing the light toward your eye rather than
scattering it--that is why it is brighter.
I am probably not describing it very well, but there was an article in
Pop photo in (around) 1994 about this, and I checked it out between my
grid screen and the standard eos-3 screen and sure enough, when focus
was perfect, it was much easier to see.
