I won't say that there is something that will need film. What I will
ask is, wasn't it here that someone once said "I can't find anybody that
can get the data off of a 5.25' diskette and I just finished printing a
60 year old negative....." ?

I think the biggest difference between 5.25" disk and CD-R is the sheer ubiquitousness
of CDs. Floppy disks became obsolete because better storage systems came along and
there is no reason to keep the old systems. However, because of the sheer amount of
music being release on CDs, I don't think it will be a problem to read CDs, even 20
years from now. The music industry doesn't seem to want to switch to SACD or
DVD-Audio, leaving the CD as the premier method of music distribution. As long as
music CDs are around in large quantities, I predict that CD-ROM readers will also be
available.
That said, prove in court that a particular digital photograph wasn't digitally
manipulated. With film, it is much harder to manipulate a negative.
