I think there's a misunderstanding here. I've never used an A-TTL
camera. I've only used E-TTL, which doesn't need a CF or
deactivation of ECF, if I understand things correctly.

I agree. I'm not totally convinced that the lack of distance info
is a problem most of the time. I'm not one who really criticizes
this in Canon...it's just something that often comes up as a
gripe on this list and elsewhere.

I must I agree with you again! E-TTL is good and is available
even for the humble Rebel 2000. (I used to own one as my primary
body, so I speak from that position of meekness. :) )
