Gary,
I use the NIMH (nickel-metal-hydride) 1600ma ones. You can get them just about
anywhere, but I got mine from Thomas Distributing, along with the MAHA 204
charger. (2-3 hours to full charge.)
http://www.thomas-distributing.com/ , if you want to check them out.
Probably the NIMH are a better choice than NICAD, since the NIMH's don't have
the memory effect you will see with NICAD's. They will still self-discharge
even if you don't use them, but you can recharge them anytime with no ill
effects.
The manual for the BP-300 doesn't mention NIMH batteries, but I called Canon and
was told there was no problem using them.
You won't get the life from a single charge of the NIMH's that you get from a
set of CR123 lithium's, but being able to recharge the NIMH's hundreds of times
means spending a lot less money in the long run. You definitely want to have a
spare (charged) set with you all the time. They will die off extremely fast on
the last leg of their charge.
Regards,
Don
