Hi Ken,

I don't think the grip action head would be a very good idea, as it
tilts at the bottom.  That means that if you lean it over, it will have
an angle that will create vibration, especially with the heavier lenses
most often used on a monopod.  I find the single axis head with a lens
with a tripod collar on it is the best bet.  That way you just swivel
the lens in the collar for verticals. 

If you don't have a tripod collar type lens, another good solution is to
use a quick release plate on top of the head, but make sure it is one
that is square.  That way, for horizontal shots, you can tilt up and
down, and for verticals, you can swap the camera sideways in the QR and
tilt it 90 degrees to one side.  Since the single axis head is so short,
not real vibration is induced.

Oh, and for the height issue, get a taller monopod!!.  I am 5'10", and
my 4 section bogen monopod is always about 5 inches too tall for me, so
it should probably be right for you at max extension.  It seems like
either bogen or slik make a "giant" or some such monopod that is even
taller.  Not sure about this, though...
