Yes, I'd say starting from f/2.8 you will not notice much difference in
sharpness, although it's still a little better at f/8 according to Photodo
(whatever this may be worth).

I think it's safe. Safe in the meaning of "not less safe than with a 
80-200 f/2.8 L". I had a broken AF switch with this professional grade
lens without any impact I can remember. Turned out the switch on
this lens is plastic as well. Oh well ...

You're not alone, it IS noisy :-(

Probably not. At least if you look at the optical quality to price
ratio. You can't do better in this respect in the EOS line. Have fun,
