I haven't been following this thread, but how about the 500D on a wide
angle.  Wide angles generally focus down to around .5 meter, and the
500D brings the furthest focusing to .5 meter, so it would seem like the
ticket if it works without screwing up the optics on a wide lens. 
Anyone know if this will work?

I am a fan of close ups with a wide lens too.
