It's a matter of getting used to it. I felt the same at first, but after a
while you'll wonder (I did anyway) how you could ever fiddle around with 
aperture rings when the thumb wheel is a so much nicer solution ;-) It's 
a slightly different way to work sometimes, mostly mentally. Of course, 
if you are used to full manual mode, you can still do this with the two 
wheels. In TV and AV, it needs a little time to learn that the wheels do
different things in different mode (change different settings, they just
sort of exchange their functionality)

Yes, it focuses real close, I think even closer than stated in the manual
at some focal lengths.
