Subject: losing focus in USM
Hello,
I had a problem emerge today, right before my eyes. Here's the situation:
I have an EOS 1N and was using the prosumer 28-105 USM lens. The
camera-lens unit was subjected to a shock, per my usual rough conditions
(hence the 1N, instead of something lighter-weight) and now the lens
doesn't seem to focus at all.
When I try to focus, the active focus point illuminates, as it should, but
the elements don't make a move and the motor is completely silent. Not in
the "USM" way of silent, but in the sense of nothing going on at all, i.e.,
dead. Even when the lens is switched to "M", manually turning the focusing
ring yields no result; apparently the gears that normally connect the focus
ring to the elements are no longer engaged.
If you've ever had/seen this problem, I'd love to know what to do about it.
I've heard that any time a tech. needs to go inside a lens, you might as
well chuck it and get a new one, w/ warranty (mine's long out). Your help
is greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Casper
