My 70-200 2.8L BARELY made it into Raymond James Stadium here in Tampa last week. With the the post-attack security measures there is not much that you can take in the stadium and I tried to take my big ol' lens. At first I got rejected but after a friendly protest I was taken to a supervisor who approved my lens as it was, sans camera and hood, less than 12" long. I really did not mind if I could not take it to the game, but I was just too lazy to want to walk it all the way back to the car! That is one scenario where the SIZE of this lens presents a problem...
