Another cheap light source can be your slide projector. Of course it
gives a warmish light, so don't use it for reproduction or at least use
a correction filter. But you can do nice things with it. I have made 
some colored slides to produce colored light. And you can also use it
to project images on your subject, although it's hard to do at high 
magnifications. At least there's a lot of fun in this approach and it's
cheap if you already own a projector.
