I pretty much ignore the AEL button on my Elan 7, unless the scene calls for
metering an area that isn't going to be in focus.  I just hold the shutter
button down halfway and recompose as necessary (or switch focusing points).
If it's going on a tripod, I either meter the scene with the camera in my
hands, then set it in M mode, or just place my faith in the metering
algorithms and stick the camera on the tripod and fire away.
