It works with D30 and didn't seem to work with G1. But G1 has documented
problems with other flashes as well.

What modes does Super 500 lack? I am curious! If anything, I noticed that it
had a built in optical slave unlike 550ex. It also has a modeling flash, and
unlike what you mention, it does have a diffuser (which I think you meant
for the 17mm coverage). I am not sure you actually used this flash. I owned
550ex, 420ex and 500 super. Sigma offers incredible value for money. I was
sold a lemon by Cameraworld, however. Sigma does not seem to be as quality
built, but it is not a fragile flash either, just that 550ex seems sturdier.
but then, it works good, and I think unless you are a very very demanding
outdoors photographer, will last. But then, I will write a report about
this when I finish using it for longer. It was a bit noisy when it focused.
