Hi Alan, AFAIK the only way to use rechargeable batteries with an EOS 1 is if you buy a Power Booster PB-E1 or Battery Pack BP-E1. With the PB-E1 you can use AA sized cells with either NiCad or NiMH types. NiCads are much less expensive outright but have a lower capacity then NiMH types. The trick is that NiMH cells are much cheaper on a cost per mAh basis! In typical consumer AA format NiCads are available in 600mAh to 1000mAh and NiMH AA's can be had up to 1800mAh with 1600mAh being the normal high capacity value. The best deals I've seen for rechargeable AA's on a cost per mAh basis are PowerSonic 600mAh standard NiCad AA's for 1.35 each and GP's 1600mAh NiMH AA @ 2.53 each, both quantity 10 from Mouser Electronics.
