but that didn't help with this issue. The viewfinder looks like
there would be fine dark dust all over, some kind of like
hazy....difficult to describe the look. I don't think this is
a problem when shooting

You should look in an old Canon FTb or whatever manual focus
camera viewfinder. You would see lots of "focusingscreen dust"
(also some real dust I'm sure). I think the more dust you have
the better you are able to focus manually, generally speaking.
