Yesterday, I was trying to figure out how to get the fastest response
time on my EOS-30. I thought I'd manually focus, put it in manual
mode, and see how fast it would fire.

The strange thing I noticed was that if I turned the focus ring before 
taking a shot, there was a (very) slight delay. If I didn't touch the
focus ring, the shutter tripped almost as soon as I pressed the
button. Tried this several times with the 28-105USM and the 100/2.8
USM macro lenses. 

So, what does this mean? Maybe the lens is communicating focusing
distance info to the camera (quite likely?) Maybe something to do with
focus confirmation? 

Has anyone experimented with this? Does this happen with other EOS
bodies as well?
