Hi Michael,

But the EF 85 1.8USM is as sharp with as good or better contrast than most
"L" class lenses and a very practical focal length to boot! Did you
buy/going to buy an "L" zoom to cover this focal length? I have Canon's "L"
zoom triplets (EF 17-35 2.8L, EF 28-70 2.8L and EF 70-200 2.8L), and keep
several primes including an EF 50 1.4USM, my trusty EF 85 1.8USM and EF 135
2L because they are faster, smaller, lighter, with faster AF speed (well
except maybe the EF 135 2L which is about the same as an EF 70-200 2.8L),
and more contrast and apparent sharpness! Of course I shoot lots of people
and like these fast primes for portraits and available light shooting on the
street etc. but the EF 85 1.8USM is a great general use lens even if it's
not an "L".

You really don't want to buy an EF 85 1.2L, the AF speed is so slow as to be
almost unbearable for anything that moves while it tries to focus. So for
an 85mm lens the 1.8USM is just about the best deal there is!

Regards,

Chip Louie
