The EF 50 1.8 series I is a very capable lens with pretty fast AF for an ARC motored focuser but a little bit noisy. I own an EF 50 1.4 USM and if not for the USM's AF speed, lack of AF noise and almost no hunting in low light (I really do use it in low light), save the money and buy a nice used EF 50 1.8 series I. I bought one for my nephew last month for $85 NIB. I've used all of Canon's 50mm offerings, EF 50 1L, EF 50 1.4USM, EF 50 1.8 I&II and the 1.8 lenses are both very sharp lenses and IMO money well spent. Unless you NEED the f/1 lens speed with its less than .5" DOF when used wide-open look at the EF 50 1.4USM or EF 50 1.8 series I. --------------------------------------------------------------- And also the 50mm F1.8 II which is built using more plastic but cheaper and arguably sharper than the 50mm F1.8 Mark I. I too use the 50mm F1.4 and have to say it is an excellent lens.
