Hi Marius,

And your point with regards to the old EF 28-80 2.8-4L is? When Canon
replaced the EF 28-80 2.8-4L they massively improved the lens in terms of
vignetting and gave it a constant f/2.8 aperture. This improved the new
lens' utility increasing its viability tremendously and was reason enough to
change to the newer EF 28-70 2.8L lens. The narrowing of the zoom range was
the compromise used to achieve the incredible sharpness and contrast of the
EF 28-70 2.8L lens, the likes of which had never been seen at the time Canon
introduced the lens.

The AF speed of the EF 28-70 2.8L is very fast (okay not quite as fast as an
EF 85 1.8USM), and unless they designed and built a new higher torque ring
USM motor or significantly reduced the mass of the focusing group it can't
be any faster without sucking up a LOT more battery power. As to being
sharper I also doubt this will be the case, the EF 28-70 2.8L is one of the
sharpest zooms ever made and is nearly equal to the best of the Canon primes
in the covered focal lengths.

As to the EF 16-35 2.8L being sharper than the EF 17-35 2.8L this was easy
as the EF 17-35 2.8L is not a very sharp lens to begin with, the EF 20-35
2.8L and EF 20-35 3.5-4.5USM are sharper with less linear distortion than
the EF 17-35 2.8L. The EF 16-35 2.8L just caught back up to where the old
EF 20-35 2.8L was but a LOT wider.

Cheers/Chip
