This is exactly what was meant by taping over some of the contacts in
extender. To make the extender behave as 3rd party extender and not give the
camera the correct information about the aperture. If you put 2X + lens with
F/5.6 and cover the "three extra contacts" (I've tried this a long time
ago... I do not remember it completely) the camera will still think the lens
is f/5.6 and thus it will try to focus it. It may fail, but I might work.
The limits are hardwired with what information comes from the lens, so you
can trick it.

This is what I think is happening also.
Besides, I see no reason for the autofocus to be that much more unrealiable
if it locks onto something. It just has much harder time to find the focus +
it might always shoot over it as it will also not understand to slow down
the focus motors.

Ps. do not try the trick based on this email... check more info about it
before you try. It really was so long time ago that I do not even remeber
which camera body and lens I used. But for me it really didn't work. Mainly
just hunted a lot - but it did get focus at some times.
